Hermes, my personal favorite.

There are times I can write some really complex things about Hermes because he is my favorite of all the Olympians to study and learn from.  I associate him with the gift of language or communication, healing, alchemy, and shamanistic initiation and training.  In this article I am going to give you some background of his history in Greece and Egypt, then let you find your own path to this divine messenger of the Olympian Gods.

Hermes was the second youngest of the Gods (Dionysus being the youngest) born to Zeus and Maia.  In his early days he was known for stealing Apollo's cattle and bringing judgement from Zeus because Apollo was angry.  Zeus never punished the son he called Hermes but instead made Hermes return the Cattle and become friends with his older brother Apollo.  The two brothers ended up helping each other as Apollo gained a lyre from Hermes and Hermes gained the famous Caducees from Apollo.  In the trial, Athena sided with Hermes, showing the wisdom of her objective conclusions.

Zeus sent Hermes to the humans to teach them knowledge of value, justice, and to help them improve their communication skills and personal relationships with each other.  This explains why he is often associated with Moses, Thoth, or Merlin.  Language is the beginning of all magical thought and Hermes was a master of magic as well as language.  Hermes character was impish and mischievous and he could be very tricky.  As Socrates noted, "words have the power to reveal or conceal and can deliver messages in ambiguous ways."  It has been said in Hermeneutics (theory and method of interpretation, being verbal, nonverbal, and written)  A divine message must be received with implicit uncertainty regarding its truth, it inflicts an irrationality that can be a sort of madness that comes over the reader or receiver.  This is where you can find trickery and deception that can be thought of as evil.  When you own the information you are able to change it all you want.  Since the 42 books written by Hermes were burned in Alexandria in the fire, we cannot know for sure what Hermes himself said.  Thus political leaders can then change the information all they want.  Advertising and commerce is a perfect example of trickery and deception.  Learning clever wit and communication can assist someone in good or bad ways.  It can reveal or conceal a thing.  Invoking the energy of Hermes and focusing on him and learning clever wit is an excellent practice for anyone, so that they can learn discernment.

What were the symbols of Hermes?  He was known for his winged sandals (swift footed), his helmet (cover of darkness) the caduceus (intertwined snakes) conjunction of opposites, rooster, tortoise, purse and the herma.    He had the ability to kill or heal a human and to raise souls.  This attributes the practice of shamanism or healing to the messenger of the gods.  As we all know language can do many things to a persons soul.  Integrity is needed before entering any kind of writing or speaking endeavor.  A master of languages was thought to be a genius and can improve all types of personal relationships.  The right message at the right time (kairos) can lift a persons soul.

I am going to include a few bullet point facts i found then allow you the freedom to interpret and search in your own way and I hope you enjoy learning about the thrice great Hermes as much as I have.
